When we visited San Antonio for the day, we got off the Riverwalk and walked down to the ElMercado.
When we arrived at El Mercado it was like we were stepping into Mexico. The buildings were painted in bright colors and the stores were set up like an outdoor market. There were flags hanging above us and the street was decorated with Mexican goods.
As we walked down the street, we hear the sounds of Mexican music. There were several Mexican men playing instruments out in the open. We sat down for awhile and listened. The streets were alive with entertainment and working artist who were selling their artwork. The south of the border influence was present at every turn.
Sierra and I went inside one of the restaurants. Mi Tierra's menu looked fabulous but we headed for the authentic Mexican pasties. Sierra and I bought our deliciates out to the rest of the family. We tried the Cream Cheese Campcantans and Carmel Campcanadas as we listen to the street music. The pastries reminded me of Phillo dough filled with cream cheese or Carmel and folded over. They were flaky and little dry. We all agreed that the Carmel was the best.
Once we finished our treats, we headed for the shops. The Market "El Mercado" is said to be the largest Mexican market north of the Rio Grande. The shops sell Mexican imports at bargin prices. Sierra bought a beautiful braclet. I wanted to purchase several things but decided that there was not room on the bus to store them. Oh, well one day we might go to Mexico and I will just purchase the things there.
On our walk back to the river, we went by this fountain in front of a church. We decided to sit down around on of the tables for a short break. We enjoyed watching the people play games and read books while our children watched the fountain. After our break, we started back to the Riverwalk.
Statue downtown with the Hemisphere in the background. There is several things to do while visiting San Antonio. One attraction is the Hemisphere, which is in the distance of this picture. Sierra really liked this statue located in the center of the street. So far, we haven't found out any information about the statue.
San Antonio is filled with all sorts of fun things for children. They have musuems, a zoo, Six Flags, and Sea World. One thing our children found funny was the house of mirrors. We didn't go inside but the children and Jeff liked the mirrors on the outside of the Mirror House.
