How do you know that this is what you are supposed to be doing?

Several people have asked us "How do you know that this is what you are supposed to be doing?"  My answer is, "This is what we feel God has called us to do. God provided and still provides everything we need to accomplish this ministry."  However, when I am finished explaining some people still look at me bewildered.  I have been praying about how else I can explain this to people who do not understand what I am saying. Then today, I read in Oswald Chambers book My Utmost For His Highest.

After reading the passage for today, I thought,"Yes, this is it." (Just a little background info.) The passage was referring to Paul. Before Jesus changed Paul's life, he was a man who put people in prison for testifying about Jesus. Paul went into synagogues to have the priest punished and he went around to cities persecuting them. Then one day Jesus appeared to him. He believed in Jesus and Jesus gave him a heavenly vision.  (You can read more in Acts 26)

Here is where the passage today picks up. It talks about the "heavenly vision".  I am going to quote several things that Mr. Chambers says in his book.
"If we lose the vision, we alone are responsible, and the way we lose the vision is by spiritual leakage. ... The only way to be obedient to the heavenly vision is to give our utmost for God's highest, and this can only be done by continually and resolutely recalling the vision. The test is the sixty seconds of every minute, and the sixty minutes of every hour, not our times of prayer and devotional meetings."  (italic is mine) (What I think he is saying is that we are to live out the vision. The vision is to be real. Other people should be able to see our vision. Prayer and devotional meetings are important but not the only times people should see our faith lived out.)

Now back to what Mr. Chambers has to say. "We cannot attain to a vision, we must live in the inspiration of it until it accomplishes itself. ... Waiting for the vision that tarries is the test of our loyalty to God. ... Are you going to prove an empty pod? It will depend on whether or not you are actually living in the light of what you have seen. Let God fling you out, and do not go until He does. If you select your own spot, you will prove an empty pod. If God sows you, you will bring forth fruit. It is essential to practice the walk of the feet in the light of the vision."

Wow, he says it in a way that I never could. Mr. Chambers is so wise. His words have transcended many generations and are still applicable today. After reading this I know have a new answer to the question, "How do you know that this is what you are supposed to be doing?"  My answer is now, "It a vision that God has given us." We are living out this vision by getting out of our comfort zone and testifying to God's Grace, Mercy, and Love in our life.  My prayer is that we would always seek God and His wisdom in accomplishing the vision that He has given us. May we live a life that reflects our faith in God, so that others will trust Jesus as their Savior and discover their vision.

Do you have a heavenly vision?

  1. Hello there!

Great post! God has lead us to do something similiar to your calling as well, starting up this fall as we wrap up our current obligations. Check out our blog at www.napkin-dreams.blogspot.com

God oftentimes calls us to things in life that are perplexing to others, even other Christians. But when we hear His voice we have to step out! Praying for you and your family and maybe we will meet up out on the road!

  2. I love this! It can be hard to explain to others that you're following God's plan for you when it looks so strange and counter-intuitive. We are praying for you all and are very blessed to call you friends and neighbors, no matter how far away you may be!
