Katie learned to ride a BIKE

Last year, when we bought bicycles for Melissa, Jacob, and Joshua, we didn't get one for Katie.  Because of her physical disabilities, she could not ride a bike.  It was extremely sad to see her stand by the bicycles and touch the handle bars only to realize that she could not ride.  As a Mom, my heart was breaking for her.

We researched special need bicycles and talked her to physical therapist.  The special need bike was over $1000.00. Katie's therapist said for us to work on strengthening Katie's leg muscles and for Katie to practice her excerises to strengthen and align her hips.

Our friend and Katie's CNA, brought her a three wheel bike but it was too tall for Katie and hard for her to pedal.  Then on Katie's birthday, we bought her a Mod. This is an upscale Big Wheel. Katie loved it and she learned to pedal with her legs extended out in front of her.  However, when everyone rode their bikes Katie would always stand beside a bike.  She was not saying a word but I knew what she was thinking by the look on her face.  Katie wanted to ride a bike like everyone else.  We would let her get on Hannah's bike but she just couldn't pedal the bike. It was heartbreaking for all of us to see Katie's disappointment.  We couldn't do anymore to help Katie.  We continued to pray that her muscles would strengthen and that one day Katie would be able to ride a bicycle with her siblings.

She starts to pedal and the bike moves!!

Today our prayers were answered.  Katie got on Hannah's bike and started to pedal.  The bike moved!!  She pedaled more and she was off!!  The smile on Katie's face was priceless.  Tears came to my eyes as I watched my little girl ride and ride down the sidewalk. I didn't get to see Katie's first steps but I got to share in her joy when she rode a bike for the first time.  This day was one I will never forget.  We thank God for answered prayers.

Katie's first bike ride!! This is a smile we have been waiting to see.
We can't get her to stop.
Way to go, Katie.  We are so proud of you!!!
