Bottomless Lakes State Park has Electric/Water hookups and several tent sites. They have a Visitor Center with interpretive displays. Their playground was "awesome" so says the children. They enjoyed playing on the seesaw, rope climbing, and the "twirly thing". Lea Lake has a swimming area with a sandy beach where we enjoyed playing in the sand. Several people were swimming but we felt the water and it was still cold. The only thing we didn't like about Bottomless Lakes was the bathhouse. The Rangers were short staffed and the bathroom needed a good cleaning with a pressure washer. The showers were filthy and bugs were hanging from spider webs. This was the first New Mexico state park that we had visited and were not accustomed to "push button" showers. Push button showers are set on a timer. You push the button and the water stays on for about 30 sec. However in shower stall #2, we had to hold the button down for water. It was like playing Twister to take a shower.
The Park is in the process of creating a Birding Habitat across from Lea Lake. We enjoyed walking the boardwalk even though we didn't see any birds. We did see Saltgrass which is a native grass that grows in wetlands.
We all enjoyed walking around the "Bottomless Lakes" which are actually sinkholes. The are said to be bottomless because in the 1800's cowboys herded cattle through this area on the Goodnight Loving Trail. People say that some cowboys tied their lariats together to find the bottom of the lake and they couldn't. Sierra said that they just didn't have enough lariats!! Truth is the sinkholes range in depth from 17 to 90 feet.
Melissa and the other children enjoyed playing in the sand around Lea Lake.
Below are a few more photos while we visited Bottomless Lakes.
Andrew playing in the sand.
Hannah taking a break from the sun and sand.
Sierra has the boys covering her feet with sand ....
...just to take them out and get on the phone. Teenager Style!!
Katie loved playing on the See Saw.
Daddy even got in on the fun.
Joshua liked the rope tower.
Jacob makes it to the top!!
I choose to stay near the bottom.
We all enjoyed our time at Bottomless Lake State Park. We will remember this park for a long time because this is where Katie learned to ride a bike and Hannah celebrated her 4th birthday.
