Today's Discoveries 11/21/09

Today we discovered that before heading to a state park to do some hiking, we should make sure the trails are open. We went to Lake Mineral Wells State Park and Trailway. We wanted to hike down a specific trail but it was closed due to the weather. I did get a few pictures at the beginning of the trail that I will post later.

We discovered that we could still hike and enjoy the day even though it was 53 degrees and cloudy. (This is something that I normally would not have done. Of course, nothing about our life now is NORMAL.)

We discovered what a cacti looks like when an animal eats part of it. We also discovered what animal scat looks like. We looked in our field guide and found out that a Collared Peccary (Javelina) lives in the area and eats cacti.

We discovered that the mosquitoes in Texas are huge. During dinner the mosquitoes were landing on the foreheads of all of us. Once a mosquito landed, we heard a "smack". It was one of the children killing the mosquito on a siblings head. It reminded me of that game where the little thing pops up and you take the hammer and hit it back down. It was quite comical to see this at dinner. Popping children on the head is usually NOT allow in our home (Rule - Hands are for loving and serving NOT HITTING) - but today we made an exception. Tomorrow we will be eating dinner IN the tent.

We discovered that hot chocolate on a cold evening around a camp fire is a good thing. A great end to a great day.
