Today's Discoveries 12/18/09

Today all the children discovered Sushi. Sierra got some at a local grocery store for everyone. Melissa, Andrew and I didn't like it. I didn't think Melissa was going to be able to swallow her's. Her eyes began to water, her cheeks were poking out, and she looked like she was turning colors. She did swallow it but I am sure she will not try Sushi again.

Jacob and Jeff discovered that our campground is located next to a Turkey Vulture roost. We have noticed during the day that we see several Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures high in the trees. Tonight, we watched several groups of these vultures fly in to roost. We learned that Turkey and Black Vultures roost together in community groups of several hundred. They roost in dead leafless trees. They come to their roost at sun down and leave independently at sun up to search for food.
These vultures eat recently dead animals. The vulture rarely kills its on food. Sometimes, you will see vultures near the shoreline eating dead fish.
The vulture has very few predators. Eagles are known to eat the vulture eggs and prey on young fledglings. When vultures are attacked they defend themselves by regurgitating semi-digested food on the predator. This stings the eyes of the predator and the foul-smelling substance will deter the predator.
The Turkey Vulture is mostly brownish-black except under the wings which are silverish-gray. The nose of the Turkey Vulture is purplish-red. The Turkey Vulture is protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

Katie discovered that her new glasses really did make her see better. Thanks Nanny and Aunt Sherry for shipping them.

The children discovered their first Christmas present. We purchased 3 bikes for the children to share. Jeff could not figure out a way to tie 7 bikes to the bus or van for hauling. Therefore, Katie and Hannah are sharing, Melissa and Sierra are sharing, and the boys are sharing bikes. We went ahead and gave them the present because we had no way of hiding 3 bikes. They are enjoying Christmas early.
