Today, we discovered Padre Island National Seashore. We had a picnic while listening to the sound of the waves, while watching the seagulls fly around, and while smelling the intoxicating smell of the salt air. Aah - the ocean!!!
After the picnic we headed for the feel of warm sand under our toes and the cold water of the Gulf of Mexico flowing over our feet. Melissa, Katie, and Joshua have never been the to the beach; so, I tried to contain my excitement and relish in theirs. Once we got down to the water, the children ran in all directions. Then, one after another, each child began bringing me their ocean treasures. Within minutes, we were learning about seashells, driftwood, and dead sea animals. School on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico was awesome!!
Once, we were finished walking on the beach, we went for a drive. This park lets people drive on the beach at the Padre Island Seashore. The children thought this was cool!! We saw several RV's camped on the beach. I would love to camp on the beach. I am going to give this some thought and prayer!!
When we left the Padre Island National Seashore, we headed back to our campground. We drove back along the coastline. When we arrived in Port Aransas, we took a ferry across the Intercoastal Waterway. It took us all of 5 minutes until we were back on land. The children were amazed that a ferry boat could take our van across the water. They particularly enjoyed it when they were allowed to get out of the van and go to the front of the ferry.
Back in the van, we headed home. Our final discovery for the day was when we saw a ranch with cattle and the ocean as a backdrop. Only in Texas would a ranch be located on the seashore!!
Padre Island National Seashore and the Gulf of Mexico - GREAT DISCOVERIES!!
