Caprock Canyon State Park in Texas

Hiking in Texas
Caprock Canyon State Park is located in Panhandle of Texas. The park has several electric/water sites with a covered picnic table and fire ring. Our Verizon cell service did not pick up well unless we were at the Park Headquarters. Thus, we didn't have Internet Service. WIFI is available through the park but we could only pick it up at Headquarters. It didn't bother us too much to be without cell and Internet because we used our time hiking and visiting the Discovery Center.

If you want to visit the Discovery Center it is only open Thurs. through Saturday from 1-5. In addition to working at the Discovery Center, Ranger Karen offers several programs for children and adults. Jeff and Sierra took her Photography Hike one evening. Sierra learned several skills that have improved her photos. Melissa, Sierra, Andrew and I attended a program called, "Palo Indians of the Plains Area". We learned that the Native Americans used an Atlatl to propel a spear to kill a Bison. With the use of the Atlatl the spear could travel at least 30 feet farther. Ms. LeAnn (Ranger Karen's volunteer) explained that the Indians also trapped the Bison in the canyon to kill them or ran them off the cliffs. She passed around some different arrowheads and explained what tribes they came from and the differences. This program had good bit of evolution material presented but our children are discerning and I was comfortable with them attending the program. As I sat listening, I glanced up at the sky.  All of a sudden, I saw a shooting star. This was the brightest shooting star I have ever seen. I could see the flaming tail break up as it cascaded across the sky. I was reminded Who hung the stars in the sky.  At the end of the program, all of us sat in the van and discussed the information that was presented and how we enjoyed being together on a crisp clear evening in a canyon.
These Bison were donated to the Texas Park and Wildlife by the JA Ranch in 1996.  The Bison here are descendants from the herd that Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight captured in 1877 because the herd was almost extinct.

This is a place near the amphitheater where the children can 'dig' for Bison bones.

We all enjoyed our time at Caprock Canyon State Park.
