The Big Texan restaurant has been in business since it became an icon on Rt. 66 in 1960. It is famous for the 72 oz steak. If you can eat the Steak Dinner in under an hour it is FREE. We watched a man, who looked like he had attempted several food challenges, fail at this 72 oz Steak challenge.
Everything is bigger in Texas!! This is a great place to eat with a large family because their portions are huge. We split one plate 3 ways. The Chicken Fried Steak is delicious. Our server, gave all the younger children cowboy hats. We enjoyed meeting and talking with her.
Only in Texas is there a rocking chair big enough for 7 children.
When we left the restaurant, we went to Cadillac Ranch off Exit 60 on I-40.
Cadillac Ranch is on private property but is open to the public when the gate is unlocked. The owner lets visitors spray paint the cars. I am not sure how long he will continue this because lots of visitors just throw their cans on the ground and walk off. The litter of spray paint cans were every where. The day we went the wind was blowing about 40mph. Therefore, we couldn't spray paint. This is one place Sierra loved and we hope to go back one day so that she can paint on the cars. (Sierra took some great pictures that I hope she gets uploaded soon.)
A trip to Amarillo, TX would not be complete without visiting these two places. If you are in the area, be sure to check them out.
