Today's Discoveries 11/24/09

We discovered the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. The is the site where the Federal Government prints money. We took a tour which tells each step in how money is made and what happens to it before it can become "legal" money. We learned that they are in the process of printing a new $100 "note" (professional term = bill) that will be available in Sept. of 2010. We got to see several 2 million dollar stacks of money, see the money come off the press, and see the money get cut and packed for shipping. We learned how the government decides how much new money to print each day and what happens it the money they print that has errors on the page. Did you know that our money is made from cotton and linen? It is - why do you think it holds up so well when it gets washed. To find out more go to www.moneyfactory.gov. You will find some lesson plans, the history of money, facts about each note, the ink they use, and much more. (look under "money facts") Because the BPE would not allow cameras, we will not have any pictures to post. We all had to go through a security check. The children thought this was cool.

I discovered that even though Hannah goes to the bathroom before a tour, she MUST leave to do her #2 business. We had to have a tour guide come and escort us from the tour, to the bathroom, and back. Hannah said, "It will be all right, Mommy." I was thankful that no one else had to leave.

The children discovered escalators. Katie did great going up except that she wanted to walk each step just like all the other children. We chose to ride the elevator down.

We discovered the Fort Worth Stockyards. This is the only place in the world that still holds cattle drives daily. We watched the 4:00 drive and learned about the purpose of a stockyard.

While at the FW Stockyard we all got a cowboy/cowgirl hat. This was a great discovery in getting 6 little ones to pick out a hat while NOT taking them all off the shelf. The nice lady rescued me and was wonderful to help all the children. We were thankful for her patience.

I discovered that I could and DID sit on a Longhorn Steer. OH YES, it was REAL. ( I am sure Sierra will post the pic later.) Jeff touched the Steer.
